Summer Workshops 2020
What a Summer! After 4 months teaching online our teachers were beyond excited to open our doors at the end of July for 4 weeks of Summer workshops. In total we welcomed 130 budding performers to RTAD from 27th July – 21st August and had 4 fun-filled and very different weeks.
Week One was ‘Shrek’ themed and had our two age groups working on pieces such as ‘Big, Bright, Beautiful World’ and ‘Welcome to Duloc’ from the Broadway and West End musical. Our older students produced some fantastic scene work depicting Lord Farquaad’s comedic search for a bride and our younger students really got into character as the small but mighty inhabitants of Duloc.
Week Two was aptly themed around ‘Back to School’ with our students working on pieces from High School Musical, Nativity! And School of Rock. Each week our pieces were filmed and edited together into a roughly 25 minute presentation video sent out to parents to enjoy in lieu of our usual end of workshop showcases.
In Week Three, we went back to the 80s, or should we say introduced our students to the 80s as they certainly weren’t around when the likes of Fame, Footloose and Elton John’s ‘Im Still Standing’ were popular. Nonetheless we had a brilliant, high energy filled week and some fantastic work was produced. Our older age groups worked on a 10 minute ‘Fame’ section including two songs and small drama pieces, whilst our younger students rocked out to Elton John’s ‘Im Still Standing’ and got to grips with some busy footwork for their ‘Footloose’ pieces.
Finally, in Week Four we celebrated our fantastic summer with some good old Disney fun! This saw us revisiting High School Musical with some more songs from the fan favourite classic as well as going ‘Crusin’ for a Bruisin’’ in our younger Jazz piece from Teen Beach The Movie and enjoying the brilliant tunes from Hercules for our older Jazz piece. Our younger students also produced some great Lion King inspired drama work whilst our older students focussed a lot of time on The Prince of Egypt performing several short scenes and two songs.
Summer workshops are always such a fun time to get together after a month or so off, welcome new people into the RTAD family and have some fun working on new material, however this year was that little bit better given it was our first time back in the studio and seeing our students in what felt like forever! Thank you to everyone who joined us, we hope you enjoyed yourselves and your parents enjoyed their videos of all of your hard work. We hope to see you again at future workshops, our next being October Half Term and Christmas!
