Dancing Over The Rainbow
On 18 March 2020, we were sadly told that we would have to close our doors for the foreseeable future as the UK went into lockdown and schools shut. Our teachers and students were all incredibly saddened by this news however we weren’t going to let it stop us from dancing and what followed over the next 6 months was amazing.
Within days of our doors shutting our team of 7 teachers were running daily Instagram live warms up getting our students, their families and a lot of new followers from across the world up and moving every morning. It was such a lovely way for us to be able to interact with everyone and in total we ran 101 free, 20-30 minute live warm ups from March – June. Several of these are still available to watch via IGTV on our Instagram page.
Within a couple of weeks we were running private and group classes via Zoom, in all styles from Ballet, Tap and Jazz to our Saturday Musical Theatre Academy which saw students from age 4 – 18 online from 10am every Saturday learning new songs and working on drama pieces and choreography.
Our students also got the opportunity to compete in the IDTA’s ‘Global Lockdance’ competition. In total we had 15 entries across 3 categories requiring them to learn and film a 1 minute dance or song piece to be submitted online and judged against students from across the world. We were incredibly proud to achieve the following results;
3rd place Musical Theatre (10-12 years)
Modern Jazz Semi-Finalists
Musical Theatre Semi-Finalists
Ana Slobodyan Saez-Benito
Whilst lockdown has not been what we had hoped for the start of our 2020 year, and the loss of our Summer Show was extremely sad for our students, teachers and parents who enjoy watching it so much, we are so proud of the commitment our students have shown and the incredible progress so many have made whilst having lessons online. As well as the achievements listed above we have had several students learn an entire Grade worth of syllabus during their Zoom classes and can’t wait to be able to enter them for their exams and give them the recognition they deserve for this hard work. We also have Rainbow certificates provided by the IDTA which we will be presenting to all students who took part in IDTA syllabus classes online. We think this is such a lovely memento for what has been a strange time and a reminder of the hard work our students put in.
